KEYNOTE - The Good Guys: Engaging and Motivating Men in Diversity

In this session you will learn about how to engage men as allies for gender equality in your firm or corporation, including how to make the business case for gender equality and how to motivate men to speak up and act on behalf of women.

The keynote will explore:

  • The Business Case: Diversity and inclusion is where the money is – learn about the eye-popping value of diversifying firms and companies at the highest levels of management and ownership.
  • Getting Men on Board: Identifying and combatting bias – learn how to provide implicit bias training in a straightforward and non-judgmental environment; learn about bias interrupters and practical information about what can be done right now to disrupt bias.
  • Motivating and Teaching Men How to Become Allies: Lean how to invite men to be part of the solution, raise awareness of gender bias and appeal to their sense of fair play to engage them in solution-building.
  • Tell Men What They Can Do to Contribute: Take home a “Monday Morning To Do List” which walks men through a candid assessment of where they stand in terms of true diversity and provides a list of specific things they can do instantly.

Pay Equity in Law

Female lawyers, both in-house and at law firms, are getting paid substantially less than their male counterparts. Studies show that amongst in-house attorneys there is a higher portion of men earning beyond $199,000 while proportionately a high percentage of women occupy lower level in-house positions. At law firms, the “old boy network” is still a major factor in compensation – a 44% difference remains, between female partners ($659,000) and male partners ($949,000). New client origination and attracting work is still being given as the main reason for the disparity in compensation. What can be done to change the pay divide in-house and at law firms?
