Time's 2017 person of the year was The Silence Breakers. How can the legal community use this momentum to create more opportunities and diversity? Key metrics such as pay equity and the ratio of women in leadership positions, show that there is inequality both in-house and at law firms. Implicit and explicit sexism is real – what can be done to create change on an individual basis, in organizations and across the country?

DESSERT & COFFEE PRESENTATION - Unconscious Bias: Understanding and Interrupting Its Effects

There is abundant evidence that demonstrates a compelling business case for diversity. Law firms and legal departments have become increasingly savvy around recruiting top, diverse talent, yet still struggle with retaining that talent. Several research studies have demonstrated there may be hidden barriers to success for racially or ethnically diverse attorneys, female attorneys and those who identify as LGBTQ. These groups may be excluded from various opportunities, including access to decision makers, meaningful work assignments, social integration and networking. At the root of this is a phenomenon known as implicit bias—how our minds process information in a way which can interfere with decision making.

  • How women who face unconscious bias can overcome its effects
  • How women can identify and move past unconscious bias we may have towards others
